Social Work
Overview
Sociologists use unbiased, empirical lenses to study the social forces that shape human behavior. This work empowers us to craft transformative policies, foster equitable organizations, and inform family relationships that benefit entire communities rather than the powerful few. In short, sociologists are catalysts for positive change.
The primary professional purpose of social work is to promote social functioning and enhance social development at all system levels. In practice, social workers:
- Act as a facilitator of change with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
- Promote improvement in social conditions
- Serve as an advocate for people who are subject to discrimination or social or economic injustice
- Provide individuals access to needed resources and services
At SIUE, we focus on application. Our students participate in hands-on experiences so they can apply what they learn in their classes to real-world experiences, including working in communities to help gather data and provide suggestions on how to make those communities stronger.
Specializations are available in:
- Diversity and Social Justice: Students complete internships in nonprofit organizations learning to write grants and help helping groups find resources to work toward greater justice.
- Employment Relations: Students complete internships in organizations where they help uncover how to make workers and workplaces more committed and productive.
